Quick! What are five recent things that made you smile?
1. The news that So. Ont will be completely engulfed in snow by Friday evening, just as we leave for Florida. Not that I'm an evil person who's planning on sending you-all 'Wish You Were Here' postcards or anything, just that...well, yeah, I guess I'm kind of an evil person. Long-deferred vacations will do that to you.
2. Relistening to some favourite Patrick McManus stories as read by George S. Irving. Especially the one tale about being a dirt-poor kid and expecting a really cool Christmas gift from the rich aunt who has been told you want 'something to do with fishing'...then, on the big morning, unwrapping: two silk ties printed with little fish on them.
3. Watching a couple of little kids and their mom earnestly discussing a music-festival poster on the subway the other morning. Kind of a had-to-be-there thing, I guess - it was just something about the way they were seriously analysing, and how she was listening - like you could tell she was teaching them to think, as a matter of course, and they were eagerly responding. I love that.
4. Along the same lines: Learning that my twelve-year-old nephew, who has lately been training hard for his sullen-teenagerhood, recently found five dollars on the floor of an empty school washroom, and promptly... wait for it... turned it in to the principal's office. Then went home and basically told his mom, very sincerely, it was all due to her instilling in him God's POV on honesty. I think she may still be in shock.
5. This strip, from the current Pearls Before Swine arc in which the crocs buy a nuke from the Russians and leave it in Zebra's front yard:

Now then. [rubs hands in anticipation] I tag...
